unable to "give to" on email import task

I am using email import and am trying to include a "give to" in the task.
Something like:
Feed the wumpus +Jane Doe
The task appears in my list but "+Jane Doe" is included in the text of the task, rather than taking that as the person to assign the task to.
I've tried various permutations of quotes, %20 for the space, even the contact id, but none of them work.
Should I be able to do "give to" in an email import?

Hi courtneyr,
Giving is not available by email, sorry! It's necessary to give a task after adding it to the Remember The Milk apps, so my only suggestion is to keep those in a place where you'll notice, like keeping them in the Inbox or untagged, etc.
